Art experiment, blocking of the background to create my figures

For most of my art, I use strong black line work somewhat similar to a cartoon style to create my figures. I wanted to try something else for this art experiment.  I played with the idea to block off part of the background with my markers to create my figures in the first painting and to try blocking off some of the figures in combination with my regular line work for the second painting.

The results are interesting.  I might experiment some more with this method in the future.  How do you like the results of my experiment with blocking off part of the background with markers instead of using line work to create the figures?
